Chapter 6

Hank

Two weeks after that…

A feeling of accomplishment falls over me as I take in the now remodeled kitchen. We’ve all worked tirelessly to reach this point and now the project is almost complete. Bea’s designs are smart and modern, yet maintain the character of the house. Being with her after all these years shows me just how colossal my mistake was in not only leaving her, but in making a decision that impacts us both by myself. We spend every minute we can together and have made love numerous times, though never in a bed. My insecurity of showing her my leg continually stops me from taking that final step, and I know that upsets her. Plus, she always returns to her motel at night, and while it kills me to take her there, I’ll respect her wishes.

Bea joins me and gives me a hug. “I showed Mr. Bomont around and he’s impressed.”

“That’s good,” I say before kissing her. “The guys will finish up outside in the next few days.”

“Maybe we can leave early,” she begins with a smile, adding, “and go on an actual date?”

I tense at the thought as I prefer to keep to myself, but I’ll do anything to make her happy. Thinking back to what I’ve overheard the others say, I tell her, “I know just the place.”

“This will be so much fun,” she exclaims, practically jumping up and down. Seeing her this excited about something so simple makes me mad at myself for not doing this sooner.

“Come on,” I tell her, wrapping an arm around her and leading her from the house. It isn’t long before we’ve cleaned up, changed clothes, and are entering the restaurant. We talk, both using the opportunity to open up, something we haven't been able to do because of work.

Bea tells me about how her parents weren’t happy about her career change, how much she loves what she does, her passion for it shining through the entire time. When she begins asking me questions, I fight the instinctive urge to close up and share what’s happened since we last saw each other. I avoid my painful recovery and learning how to use my new leg. It’s a subject I'm not comfortable discussing and probably never will be.

All too soon our meal is over, though I wanted it to go on forever. It felt normal being there with her, just like when we’d try dive bars in Cambridge when we were dating.

“You're coming home with me,” I inform her as we walk to the car and I help her in. I break every speed limit during the drive there, and we stumble through the front door, laughing and kissing on the way to my room. However, anxiety hits when I realize she’s going to see my leg. Not just that, but I’ll have to take it off since we’ll be on the bed.

“Let me undress you,” she whispers, more than likely sensing my hesitancy. I nod, then close my eyes and shiver from the feel of her hands sliding under my shirt and up my chest.
